SchoolSmartKC Headquarters

SchoolSmartKC is a startup non-profit organization that focuses its energy and financial support on improving, expanding, and fortifying schools and programs that ensure a high quality education for all students within the boundaries of the Kansas City Public School District. Previously housed in the Kauffman Foundation building, SchoolSmartKC has moved into its first headquarters in the heart of Kansas City, Missouri. The three-building property near 31st & Gillham in Midtown Kansas City sat vacant for several years prior to this renovation.

Beginning with a mini-charrette and visioning session, the Odimo team crafted an open plan integrating an executive level board room with community workshop space and small break out rooms. Several furniture options were explored to balance function, color, and design. Branded as “The Hive,” the color in the space is intended to come from those who inhabit and activate the space. The design is a simple background of grays and blues with highly functional, flexible furniture, and an abundance of natural light and collaborative tools. Acoustics are modulated with a hanging synthetic wool baffle, and lighting is carefully selected for each area of use.

Working hand-in-hand with the building ownership and construction group, Screenland, the Odimo team also led the full core and shell renovation of this 37,000 square-foot historic structure. The total renovation includes a new roof, new windows, and new HVAC throughout; as well as upgrades to the electrical, plumbing, and fire suppression systems; ADA upgrades, elevator, and egress components.

We are honored to be part of this project and to contribute a thoroughly planned and designed space that will support SchoolSmartKC in their mission to eliminate the achievement gap for students in our community.  Visit their website to learn more about SchoolSmartKC!
